This is an unusual album in Ornette Coleman’s catalogue, and one most critics passed by. It provides a special insight into the free jazz pioneer’s way of working in the early 70s. It was recorded at Coleman’s large loft space in downtown New York, where many experimental musicians, locked out of playing established venues, were inspired, so allowing a whole scene to flourish. The music is a romp, with Ornette playing trumpet as well as saxophone. His quartet, which featured second saxophonist Dewey Redman alongside long term cohorts Ed Blackwell and Charlie Haden, proved to be the perfect foil for this short set.

“Friends and Neighbours is an entry-level Ornette Coleman album for those a bit fearful of undertaking the groundbreaking Free Jazz. The good natured material, criss-cross melodic lines and superb rhythm section make for a joyous collection of pieces which gently ease you toward the slightly more demanding closing passages”
