Head South — in cinemas October 31st — is a portal back in time to the Christchurch music scene of 1979. Director Jonathan Ogilvie from cult band YFC has faithfully recreated a singular moment that was at once post-punk and pre-nun, culminating in a recreation of legendary venue Mollett St where Roger Shepherd was blown away by The Enemy.
The original motion picture soundtrack features an original score by Shayne Carter of Straitjacket Fits and Dimmer plus songs arranged and performed by Shayne Carter and Stella Bennett (Benee), and more post-punk songs as performed in the film.
"Director Jonathan Ogilvie’s Head South is an offbeat tribute to the creative stirrings of New Zealand (Aotearoa) in the 1980s, when Flying Nun Records – an independent music label that now has worldwide cult status – was founded in the South Island. The semi-autobiographical story of a naive teen who enters a Christchurch record store’s orbit and starts a band, it is both coming-of-age and subculture origin story, made strange by a paranormal twist that indulges the gothic bent, madcap eccentricity and existential disquiet often found in New Zealand cinema." -British Film Institute
